Applies to: Wii U
Nintendo constantly aims to improve its services and the functionality of its consoles in order to provide customers with the best possible user experience. As a part of these efforts, we are making system software updates for Wii U available through the Internet, and also pre-installing them on selected Wii U discs.
The length of time it takes to perform a system update varies depending on the speed of the Internet connection used. Please be patient.
Performing a system update may take an extended amount of time (for some users it could take an hour or more to download and install). Do not power off your console or remove the Wii U AC Adapter during this time.
Background download of system updates
System updates will be downloaded automatically if the console is connected to the Internet. Once the download has completed, a prompt to install the system update will appear at certain screens.
It is possible to perform the initial system update in the background, allowing you to play games while the data is downloading, by following these steps.
System updates can also be performed manually if the console is connected to the internet by starting System Settings from the Wii U Menu, and then selecting SYSTEM UPDATE. For more information please read our Step-by-Step description.
IMPORTANT: Your Wii U console is not designed for use with any existing or future unauthorised device or software that enables technical modification of the Wii U console or software. Any such unauthorised use may render your Wii U console permanently unplayable and result in the removal of content.
If an error occurs during the system update process, please contact our Nintendo Service Centre who will be able to assist you.
