Joy-Con Controller Buttons Are Not Responding While Attached

Description:

The buttons on the Joy-Con controller do not respond or respond incorrectly while they are attached to the Nintendo Switch console.

Additional Information:

The button test feature on the console is not available for the following buttons:

  • POWER Button
  • Volume Buttons
  • HOME Button
  • SYNC Button
  • Capture Button

What to Do:

  1. Check if the non-responsive buttons feel sticky or stuck down.

Power off the console and clean the area around the problematic buttons using a soft, dry toothbrush.

    • Avoid using any cleaners or fluids.
  2. Ensure your console has the latest system version.
    • If the console is already up to date, restart it by holding down the POWER Button for three seconds, then selecting "Power Options" > "Restart".

    • If the console does not go into sleep mode, continue to troubleshoot the POWER Button by clicking here.

    • If the volume buttons are still unresponsive, click here.

  1. While navigating the menus or within a game, press the HOME Button.
    • If the screen does not return to the HOME Menu, there may be an issue with the console or with the Joy-Con (R).
    • If possible, test the console using another Joy-Con (R).
      • If a second Joy-Con (R) works correctly on the console, the original Joy-Con (R) will need to be repaired.
