    How to Start a Multiplayer Game (Super Mario Party)

    In this article, you'll learn how to start a multiplayer game in Super Mario Party.

    Note

    • Up to four players can play offline on a single Nintendo Switch console. Each player must use a single Joy-Con.
    • To play games in Toad's Rec Room across multiple screens, two Nintendo Switch consoles and two copies of Super Mario Party are required.
      • Due to differing screen sizes, the play experience of Toad's Rec Room may change when playing with a combination of Nintendo Switch – OLED Model consoles and Nintendo Switch consoles or Nintendo Switch Lite systems.
    • A Nintendo Switch Online membership and a copy of Super Mario Party are required on each console in order to play online.
    • Online play is possible with any of these console and player combinations:
      • 2-4 Nintendo Switch consoles with 1 player on each console
      • 2 Nintendo Switch consoles with 2 players on each console
      • 1 Nintendo Switch console with 2 players on the console and 1 Nintendo Switch console with 1 player on the console
    • Some game modes and minigames cannot be played online.
    • Voice chat is available using the Nintendo Switch Online smartphone app while playing online in Friend Match or Private Game.

    How do you want to play?

    1. Open Super Mario Party and select your user account.
    2. Select the number of consoles and players.
      • Up to two consoles can connect locally. Both consoles must have a copy of the game.
      • Each player must use a single Joy-Con controller.
    3. Pair each Joy-Con controller.
    4. Each player will select a character. If there are fewer than four players, you will be prompted to select computer players by difficulty level.
    5. Select the game mode you wish to play by exploring the plaza.
      • After you have discovered a game mode in the plaza for the first time, you can quickly select it from the Party Pad.
    1. Make sure that Super Mario Party has been updated to the latest version on each console. Some online modes are only available after updating the software.
    2. Open Super Mario Party and select your user account.
    3. Select the number of players (up to 2).
      • It is not possible to pair two consoles locally and play online.
      • Each console can have no more than 2 players when playing online.
    4. Pair each Joy-Con controller.
    5. Each player will select a character. You will then be prompted to select computer players by difficulty level.
    6. Explore the plaza to select one of the available game modes for online play.
      • The following modes are available for online play: Mario Party, Partner Party, Minigames and Online Mariothon.
      • After you have discovered a game mode in the plaza for the first time, you can quickly select it from the Party Pad.

    Which game mode do you want to play?

     

    1. After selecting the game mode, scroll left or right to select Online Play.
    2. Select Friend Match or Private Game, depending on who you wish to play with.
      • Friend Match allows you to play with any friends on your friend list who are online.
      • Private Game allows you to play a password-protected game. Anyone with the password can enter.
    3. Select whether to play with Two Players on a System or One Player on a System.
    4. Select Create a Room or Join a Room.
      • Create a Room lets you host a game. For Friend Match, you can choose whether or not to set a password. Private Game requires you to set a password of up to 5 characters.
      • Join a Room lets you join a game that someone else is hosting. For Friend Match, any of your friends who have created a room will be listed. For Private Game, you must enter the password to join.
    5. Players that join will select their character and the host will determine the game settings. Once all players have selected their character, the host can start the game.

    Online Mariothon is an online-only mode.

    1. After selecting the game mode, select Worldwide Match or Friend Match.
      • Worldwide Match allows you to play with other random players online. After selecting this mode, the game will search for other players and begin once all players are found.
      • Friend Match allows you to create or join a game with friends on your friend list.
    2. If Friend Match is selected, choose whether to Create a Coliseum or Enter a Coliseum.
      • Create a Coliseum lets you host a game. You can choose whether or not to set a password of up to 5 characters for other players to enter in order to join.
      • Enter a Coliseum lets you join a game that a friend is hosting. Any of your friends who have created a coliseum will be listed.
