How to Update Super Smash Bros. Ultimate

Instructions for how to update Super Smash Bros. Ultimate on Nintendo Switch.

On 31 May 2019 a new software update for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate became available for download. Please take a moment to download and install this update while your Nintendo Switch console is connected to the internet.

Additional Information:

  • This update must be applied in order to use the game’s online features.
  • A Nintendo Switch Online membership is required to use the game's online features.
  • All players must be using the same version of the software to participate in Local Wireless Battles.
  • Replay data from previous versions is not compatible with the newest version. Be sure to convert your replays by going to the Vault in the main menu and selecting "Convert to Video" before updating the software.
  • Save data will still be available for use after downloading the update.
  • If the console is connected to the internet, the update will download and install automatically.

Complete These Steps:

  1. Connect the Nintendo Switch console to the internet.
  2. Return to the HOME Menu and launch the game.
  3. The update will be downloaded and installed automatically.
  4. Once the update is installed, the newest version number will be displayed on the title screen.

Version 3.1.0

  • Offline
    • You can use the Toy-Con VR Goggles to enjoy Smash in VR mode via the Games & More menu.
      • VR mode is a single-player experience only.
      • The Toy-Con VR Goggles are sold separately as part of Nintendo Labo Toy-Con 04: VR Kit or Nintendo Labo Toy-Con 04: VR Kit - Starter Set + Blaster.
      • This is shown on Nintendo Labo’s page as well.
  • Online
    • FPs can be used in Battle Arenas.
    • An option to send amiibo out on journeys has been added, through which FPs go on a journey to train via the internet. You can find it via Games & More → amiibo → Send on a Journey.
    • Some of the preferred rules for Quickplay battles have been adjusted.
  • General
    • Game balance adjustments have been made.
    • Several issues have been fixed to improve gameplay experience.

Version 3.0.1

  • Games & More
    • A bug where winning with a Final Smash while on Joker's route in Classic Mode would prevent the game from progressing has been fixed.
  • General
    • Several issues have been fixed to improve gameplay experience.
  • There is replay compatibility with Ver. 3.0.0, but not with Ver. 2.0.2 and earlier.

Version 3.0.0

  • Offline
    • Stage Builder added to Games & More. You can now draw your own custom stages by hand.
      • Camera controls are not available when converting a replay that contains a custom stage into a video.
    • Edit Video feature added to Vault → Replays. You can now create new movies using several videos made from replays.
      • Only videos from Ver. 3.0.0 or later can be used as source material. There are planned expansions to the Edit Video feature in future updates.
    • DLC Spirits option added to the Spirits menu.
      • DLC spirits can only be used if you have purchased the corresponding downloadable content.

      • You cannot post replays of online/local wireless battles on custom stages, or videos that include custom stages.
    • You can now sync your game with Smash World, a service accessible via the Nintendo Switch Online smart device app. Available features include viewing some of the things posted to Shared Content, and creating spirit teams from the spirits you have collected.
      • The Smash World service is planned to begin after the distribution of Ver. 3.0.0. If you still don't see Smash World in your list of services, please try again later.
    • It is now easier to be matched with players who have a similar Global Smash Power in Quickplay. Further improvements and adjustments to matchmaking are planned.
  • General
    • The following downloadable content will be usable after purchase:

      • Persona 3 Protagonist Wig + Outfit

    • You cannot make videos of replays that contain DLC you have not purchased (fighters, stages, music, Mii Fighter costumes, etc.).
    • Game-balance adjustments have been made.
    • Several issues have been fixed to improve gameplay experience.

Version 2.0.2

  • Added support for the upcoming Daisy, Young Link, and Ken amiibo figures.

    • Fixed an issue in ver. 2.0.0 where an adventure challenge featuring King K. Rool could not be completed.
      If this issue has affected you, please load the corresponding Adventure save data and then return to the main menu.
