    How to Update Super Mario Maker 2

    Instructions on installing the update for Super Mario Maker 2 on Nintendo Switch.

    On 7 February 2024 a new software update for Super Mario Maker 2 became available for download. Please take a moment to download and install this update while your Nintendo Switch console is connected to the internet.

    Additional Information:

    • This update must be applied in order to use the game’s online features.
    • Save data will still be available for use after downloading the update.
    • If the console is connected to the internet, the update will be downloaded and installed automatically.

    Complete These Steps:

    1. Connect the Nintendo Switch console to the internet.
    2. Return to the HOME Menu and launch the game.
    3. The update will be downloaded and installed automatically.
    4. Once the update is installed, the newest version number will be displayed on the title screen.

    Course Info

    • When the player opens the pause menu while playing Ninji Speedruns, they will not be able to perform any actions for a certain period after closing the pause menu.

    Network Play

    • After updating to Ver. 3.0.1, you will no longer be able to match with players using Ver. 3.0.0 or lower in Network Play.

      • Select the Cursed Key by first placing a Key, then changing its type from the options available.
      • The Dotted-Line Block has been newly added to the Super Mario 3D World game style. It has been available in all other game styles since Ver. 1.0.0.

    World Maker

    • You can now select World Maker and Worldbot from the main menu.
    • In World Maker, you can create your own Super Worlds.
      • You can set up to eight worlds and 40 courses in one Super World.
      • You can set courses that are saved under My Courses in Coursebot.
    • In Worldbot, you can view Super Worlds that you made in World Maker.
      • You can save up to six Super Worlds.
      • Each Maker can upload one Super World to Course World.

    Course World

    • Super Worlds have been added.
      • You can play Super Worlds uploaded by makers around the globe.
    • If a maker uploads a Super World, it will be displayed in the Overview section of their Maker Profile.
    • Added a list of Super Worlds a maker has played to their Maker Profile.
    • Added a friend list to Leaderboards.
      • Friends who have allowed “Share to Friend List” in Options will be displayed here.
    • In Leaderboards, the order of the list of makers you’re following has been changed to display whoever uploaded a course most recently first.
    • Increased the number of tags that can be added to a course.
      • Added the following tags: Art, Technical, Shooter, Boss battle, Single player and Link.
      • Courses that are tagged with “Single player” will not be selected in Network Play.
    • You can now download courses that you posted to My Courses in Coursebot.
    • Added a list of friends’ times to Everyone’s Times in Ninji Speedruns.
      • Friends who have allowed “Share to Friend List” in Options will be displayed here.
    • Added gear that can be acquired in Easy and Normal modes of Endless Challenge.
      • If the conditions for earning this gear were met in Ver. 2.0.0 or earlier, you will acquire it when updating to Ver. 3.0.0.

    General

    • Added “Share to Friend List” to Options.
      • By setting this to “Allow”, your friends will be able to see your information in Leaderboards and Ninji Speedruns.
    • Issues have been fixed to make for a more pleasant gaming experience.

    • Select the Master Sword by first placing a Super Mushroom, then changing its type from the options available.
    • Select the Frozen Coin by first placing a coin, then changing its type from the options available.

    Course World

    • The Ninji Speedruns mode has been added.
    • New conditions have been added to Detailed Search when searching for courses.
      • Multiplayer Versus courses can now be displayed in order of popularity.
      • Course searches can now be further refined by applying the “Date Uploaded” condition.
      • Course searches can now be further refined by applying the “Number of Plays” condition.
    • The number of likes a maker has received will now be displayed in the Overview section of their Maker Profile.
    • Makers are now less likely to lose Maker points when uploading a new course.
      • As part of this change, Maker points may increase compared to their value prior to installing this update.

    Course World

    Network Play

    • Added “Play with friends”
      • You can now play online with friends in either Multiplayer Versus or Multiplayer Co-op modes.
      • You can now select courses uploaded to Course World as well as courses saved to Coursebot.
      • The Nintendo Switch Online smart device app is now supported.
        • You can be automatically matched online with people that you were matched with via the app, and can use voice chat with them.
    • Added features to “Nearby Play”
      • You can now play in Multiplayer Co-op mode as well as Multiplayer Versus mode.
      • You can now select courses uploaded to Course World as well as courses saved to Coursebot.
      • When playing a course saved to Coursebot, the host console doesn’t need to be connected to the internet.
    • Added “LAN Play”
      • Players connected to the same LAN (Local Area Network) can now play together wirelessly.
      • After selecting Network Play, you can switch to LAN Play mode by clicking in the Left Stick and pressing the L Button or R Button.
    • If the connection is unstable before Multiplayer Co-op or Multiplayer Versus starts, the match will be cancelled.
    • In Multiplayer Co-op, when everyone chooses “Let’s start over!”, the timer will now be reset.
    • Changed the look of the gauge for S+, the highest rank in Multiplayer Versus.
    • If a player places Builder Boxes after a warp point, other players will now be able to break them and proceed forward.
    • All players will take the same amount of time to move through a Warp Pipe, regardless of the state of their character.
    • After updating to Ver. 1.1.0, you will no longer be able to match with players using Ver. 1.0.1 or lower in Network Play.

    Course Info

    • You can now select "Play Together" directly from any course uploaded to a player’s profile.
    • Simplified the display of comments containing stamps in “View comments”.

    Maker Profile

    • Added a refresh/update button to “Courses uploaded”.
    • Added a list showing a user’s 100 most recent First Clears.
    • Now displays a user’s total number of First Clears.
    • Now displays a user’s total number of world-record times.

    Official Makers

    • Added a list of Official Makers in Leaderboards.

    Course Maker

    • You can now use touch controls with button controls in handheld mode.
      • You can also go back to touch-only controls from Settings in the main menu.

    General

    • You can now play with a Joy-Con held horizontally in all game modes.
      • You can change your controller grip from Settings in the main menu.
    • Other issues have been fixed to make for a more pleasant gaming experience.
