Error Message: The Software Was Closed Because An Error Occurred

Description:

  • An error message is received while starting a game or during gameplay on Nintendo Switch.
  • The following message is displayed: “The software was closed because an error occurred,” along with a “!” mark at the top of the screen.

What to Do:

  1. Restart your console by holding down the POWER Button for three seconds, then selecting "Power Options" > "Restart".
  2. Verify that your console has the latest system version.
  3. Check for any available updates for the problematic software, then start the game.

If the issue persists, determine with which type of software this is occurring more frequently:


  1. Remove and reinsert the game card a couple of times.
  2. If possible, test with a different game card.

Situation Not Resolved:

  • If the issue is occurring with multiple game cards, the Nintendo Switch console will need to be repaired.
    • For testing purposes include two of the problematic game cards.

  • If the error continues to occur with a single game card, determine who the publisher of the software is:
    • Published by Nintendo
      The problematic game card will need to be repaired. Do not send in the console.
    • Published by a licensee
      Contact the licensee for assistance.


  1. Check for any corrupt data for the problematic software.
  2. Delete the problematic software and redownload it.
    • If the error persists and a microSD card is being used, power off the console and remove the microSD card, then redownload the software to the console' system memory.
    • If the software can be downloaded correctly to the system memory, but the error occurs using the microSD card, you can continue troubleshooting the microSD card by clicking here.

Situation Not Resolved:

If the error persists, then the Nintendo Switch console will need to be repaired.
