Gameplay

Mario Tennis: Ultra Smash is a thrilling spin on the classic sport with a wacky cast of characters, dazzling Chance Shots, size-boosting Mega Mushrooms and many more surprises. You’ve never played tennis quite like this!

The ball’s in your court

Mario Tennis: Ultra Smash features intuitive controls that will help anyone from pro to novice players get into the swing of things. Move around the court using the left analogue stick and start by getting to grips with the following:

Master a variety of different shots and control the court –anyone can grab a racket and join in using the Wii U GamePad, Wii U Pro Controllers, Wii Remotes, or Wii Remotes and Classic Controllers.*

What a display!

When you play with the Wii U GamePad, you’ll have a choice of display modes that use both the GamePad screen and TV screen in unique ways. Experiment with different views and dynamic cameras to give you and others watching the best perspective on the action, or play using just the GamePad with off-TV play.

Better chance it

Look out for coloured circles called ‘Chance Areas’ that appear on the court. Move into position in time and use the right shot type while standing in the Chance Area to turn it into a Chance Shot – with added speed and power!

Super-size me!

Want to get a HUGE advantage on your opponent? When a Mega Mushroom appears on the court, grab it to get a size boost for a limited time! When you grow in size, your swings will return balls that bounce higher, and with enough power to push your opponents back!

Bouncing back

The Mushroom Kingdom’s best are all warming up for a massive game of tennis! Seasoned players such as Mario, Luigi, Peach, Yoshi and many more are returning to the court, as well as plenty of new arrivals picking up a racket for the first time. Each character has their own unique traits, whether they’re fast, strong or just a good all-rounder.

Your choice of court is just as varied. From traditional grass and clay to unpredictable mushroom and ice surfaces, each court will affect the speed and bounce of the ball differently, so choose wisely!

Rally up rewards

There are new characters, courts, features, and much more to unlock! Just visit the Rewards section from the main menu to see a grid of challenges for you to complete. Fulfil the conditions to unlock rewards, or spend coins earned by playing different modes to access rewards earlier.
