Red Faction II

System: Nintendo GameCube Release date: 01/06/2003

If mankind ever makes Mars habitable, the Martian tourist industry is going to have an incredibly tough time. Face it - who'd want to visit somewhere that's been the source of bad B-movies and countless crummy comics? But poor pulp fiction is the least of the worries of Red Faction II's folk. They've got bigger fish to fry, like having a warmongering dictator telling them how to live. Or facing a death sentence, which is the literal noose that hangs around our hero's neck as the game begins. As demolition expert Alias, one of six super soldiers, you must join with your team to take down the dictator and restore health and happiness to the red planet. Naturally, this means dishing out the kind of Martian justice that only Arnold Schwarzenegger can match. There are 14 weapons to choose from - from pistols to rocket launchers - and each leaves its everlasting mark on the environment. A clever in-game physics engine called Geo-Mod allows you to dent or destroy virtually anything. For instance, you can use a rocket launcher to blast your way through rock walls to reach secret rooms - all shown in splintering graphical glory. Another neat addition is the ability to hold a gun in each hand, controlled by the L and R buttons, so you can blast away with a pair of pistols cowboy-style. Plus, find a vehicle such as a submarine, tank or hover car and you can climb aboard and continue the carnage from a comfy seat. Of course, no first-person shooter is complete without a multiplayer mode, and Red Faction 2 has it in bucketfuls. Up to four players can compete in head-to-head matches (with computer-controlled bots if you like) that include such modes as Capture the Flag, Arena, Team Arena and more. There are plenty more surprises in store (such as different game endings depending on how heroic you are during the game) and a major movie-style plot twist. If you want to know what, there's only one way to find out...
