Sega Rally Championship

System: Game Boy Advance Release date: 02/05/2003

Sega's trend of converting its most famous games to GBA has allowed us play such classics as Sonic the Hedgehog, Chu Chu Rocket and Super Monkey Ball in bed, in a bath or at the bus stop. Now it's the turn of Sega Rally to sap your free time. Sega Rally Championship for Game Boy Advance features six new international courses to tear around in single player mode, plus variable weather conditions, tweak-able car settings, and enough options to keep the average grease monkey happy. There are also the standard Time Attack and multiplayer modes (in which you can compete with up to three friends via link cable). But there's more to discover underneath the bonnet. Sega Rally Championship also features a bonus system that's now becoming standard for all of Sega's GBA conversions. Successful racing will reward you with points which you can use to unlock new features including new courses, cars, mini-games and Sega Rally History and Art Gallery sections. The mini-games, called RC Rally, put you in control of a remote-controlled rally car in an effort to race around tiny circuits and pick up coins. As well as offering a pleasant diversion from rallying, it's an extra incentive to perform well in the regular game, and win more bonus-buying Rally Points. Rally fans will be pleased to know that, like its arcade big brother, Sega Rally Championship features a full roster of licensed cars from the racing world's top manufacturers such as Ford, Toyota, Subaru, Mitsubishi and Peugeot. Let's just hope they don't mind you getting them dirty. Naturally, a conversion from an arcade game to Game Boy Advance is going to have its limits. Sega Rally Championship obviously can't compete in terms of graphics but it's got plenty of gameplay depth, especially in the mini-games and extras, to make it worth taking for a spin.
