Sega Arcade Gallery

System: Game Boy Advance Release date: 01/08/2003

Back in the 80s, bringing Afterburner, Super Hang On, Out Run and Space Harrier together would have meant hiring a small garage. Now, you can carry all four in your pocket, thanks to Game Boy Advance. Sega Arcade Gallery squeezes four classic Sega arcade games – each designed by the legendary Yu Suzuki – onto one tiny cartridge, and each is presented as close as possible to their original graphical and sonic styles.

Arguably the most famous of the bunch, Out Run, puts you in control of an open-top Ferrari in a series of high-speed checkpoint races against a tough time limit. Fans of the original will lap up the attention to detail in Bits Studios' conversion, which even includes the memorable music (with great names like 'Magical Sound Shower' or 'Passing Breeze').

Next up is Afterburner, which comes to GBA impressively intact (apart from its huge, tilting arcade cabinet, naturally). As a jet fighter pilot, you must use your guns and missiles to blast your way through squadrons of enemy aircraft.

If you prefer your high speed thrills on the ground rather than in the air, then Super Hang On delivers the goods. The sequel to Hang On introduced a boost system, making it one of the fastest racers of its era, and it still holds its own in the speed stakes today.

Last, and definitely not least, is Space Harrier. This classic 3D 'into-the-screen' shooter from 1985 tasks you to blast your way through wave after wave of alien enemies and gigantic boss creatures.

With a quartet of totally different experiences on offer, Sega Arcade Gallery offers four old-school thrills for the price of one – all squeezed into a portable package. There are no special extras, and no battery back-up to record high scores, but each game is a faithful rendition of the original.
