You can set yourself one of a whole range of challenges and get more out of the game. If you're feeling confident about your skills, take on one of the tougher challenges.
Speed Challenges
Clear the course within the time limit. It's all about speed and accuracy.

The counter on the top right of the screen displays the time remaining. (The counter won't display the time specifically for these challenges).

Technique Challenges
Make full use of your skills to fulfil a range of conditions, such as jumping on Bullet Bills to rack up 50 extra lives in a row.
Technique Challenges
When aiming for continuous 1-Ups, count the number of 1-Ups you get as you play. (You can also tell from the number of lives Mario has left, displayed in the top left corner.)
