Rise of the robots

The evil Andross has invaded the Lylat System with the help of his sprawling, menacing empire, and an age of peace has come to an end. Yet, against this backdrop of war, business is booming for one small, up-and-coming mining company – and you’re its newest employee!

Grippy Toad – head honcho of Corneria Precious Metals Ltd. – has appointed you as the company’s very own defence specialist, and it’s your job to ward off an army of robotic rust buckets who want nothing more than to put a stop to Grippy’s lucrative mining operations. Luckily for you, Slippy Toad – Grippy's nephew and long-time member of the Star Fox squadron – has just the ticket…

Gameplay

Star Fox Guard is an action game featuring strategy and puzzle elements, where players must defend a base from intruding – but cute! – robots. Look out for enemies on the TV screen, then blast them away using the Wii U GamePad.

En garde!

At the centre of each maze-like mining facility is a fragile tower which must be defended at all costs, or else it’s game over! Recently, the automaton onslaughts have become more and more commonplace, but Slippy Toad – Grippy’s nephew and long-time member of the Star Fox team – has just the ticket.

CI16_WiiU_StarFoxGuard_Tower.jpg

Introducing Slippy’s latest and greatest invention: the AegisCam system! This sophisticated surveillance network consists of a dozen highly-manoeuvrable, weaponised security cameras that can only be controlled with the power of the Wii U GamePad, and you’re in charge!

CI16_WiiU_StarFoxGuard_Gameplay_01.jpg

Watch out!

Keep an eye out for intruders by surveying the 12 video feeds on the TV screen, then tap the corresponding camera on the GamePad touch screen to take control, take aim and take those troublemakers down before they reach the central tower. The GamePad touch screen gives you a bird’s-eye blueprint of the facility, so you can see the whereabouts of your cameras, as well as a radar to reveal any robots that have managed to breach the perimeter.

CI16_WiiU_StarFoxGuard_CloseGamePad.jpg

Prepare yourself

Use the GamePad touch screen to reposition cameras and adjust their aim to your liking – cover all angles and leave the enemy with no place to hide! Good preparation can make all the difference, so if you fail to prepare, prepare to fail.

CI16_WiiU_StarFoxGuard_PrepareTV_enGB.jpg

They’re everywhere!

Enemies will encroach from all angles, so stay sharp, tadpole! You’ll have to be on constant lookout as you desperately defend the base from relentless waves of mischievous bots. Keep your eyes peeled and don’t let up!

CI16_WiiU_StarFoxGuard_HihoKing.jpg

Show ‘em who’s boss

Be on your guard and prepare yourself for a number of hard-as-nails boss encounters scattered throughout the game. These super-sized foes aren’t particularly sneaky, as you’d imagine – instead, they rely on brute strength and sheer scope to unleash wanton destruction on Grippy’s bases. Take them down before they reduce everything to rubble!

Enemies

Intelligence has informed us that there are two main classes of robot to watch out for, so learn the difference!

CI7_WiiU_StarFoxGuard_ChaosClassBlighters.jpg

Chaotic combat

Combat Class robots are gung-ho fighters, built for one thing and one thing only – destruction! They’ll head straight for the precious tower unless you stop them, so taking them out is mission priority number one.

CI7_WiiU_StarFoxGuard_CombatClassRobots.jpg

Chaos Class robots, on the other hand, will try to distract you in a number of different ways, like stealing your cameras or even destroying them entirely! If you don’t take care of them, they’ll wreak complete and utter havoc on your systems and blaze a trail to the tower for the Combat Class bots to follow.

Lots of bots

There are loads of weird and wonderful machines to behold in the Lylat System, the majority of which are out to make your life – and your job – as difficult as robotically possible. The chicken-esque Clucktrons have a curious affinity for surveillance cams; they’ll fall in love with the first camera they see and whisk it away from under your nose! Meanwhile, Snailblazers are marauding molluscs that can climb up and over walls to cut a more direct route to the tower.

CI16_WiiU_StarFoxGuard_Enemies.jpg

Take down the self-destructing Hi-Ho units before they damage your cameras, and watch out for any encroaching A.T.K. Units making a break for the tower! Just when you think the coast is clear, you’ll be assailed by rolling robots that explode into clouds of dense smoke, Dishruptor enemies who interfere with your video signals, and a whole host of other aggravating automatons.

These bots are just a taste of the army you’ll be fighting against in Star Fox Guard. In fact, there are over 25 different types of enemy to despatch, so you’ll need to be on your toes at all times if you want to repel the assaults.

Unlockables

Following a successful mission, a friendly, toad-like robot known as Re:bot hops around the stage to salvage any precious metal left behind by defeated enemies. By collecting metal, you’ll rank up and unlock lots of cool new weapons, extra missions and more!

Guardian. Gatherer.

The amount of metal Re:bot collects will depend on a number of factors, such as how many Combat Class bots you defeated and how tough they were. You can also gain bonus points for completing a Perfect Guard, or by defending the tower from an attacker at the very last second. Gather as much metal as you possibly can to rapidly rise through the ranks and upgrade your arsenal.

CI16_WiiU_StarFoxGuard_Results_enGB.jpg

Wily weapons

Use the X-Ray Cam to see and attack through walls, bring time to a crawl with the Slow Cam or rain destructive fire down from above by equipping the Copter Cam. Turn enemies to ice with the sub-zero Freeze Cam, or use the Lock-On Cam to target multiple foes at once. Discover even more camera upgrades and construct the ultimate impenetrable fortress!

CI16_WiiU_StarFoxGuard_RankUnlock_enGB.jpg

Star signs

Fulfilling certain objectives during missions also unlocks symbols, special emblems that you can use to customise your online profile*. Achieved something you’re particularly proud of? Show it off to the world with a customisable symbol and let them know they’re dealing with a Star Fox Guard pro!

Missions

As you progress through the Story Mode and harvest precious metal, you’ll unlock a ton of Extra Missions with different rules, enemies and abilities to contend with, making things extra frantic and devilishly challenging. Take on these optional missions for an even greater challenge!

Here are just some of the types of mission available in Star Fox Guard.

Main Missions

Use the AegisCam system to frantically switch between cameras and blast away all Combat Class robots to clear the mission.

Airdrop

Fend off the airborne invasion! Bots will parachute down from the skies, so take them out before they touch base. Don’t shoot the parachutes, though…

CI16_WiiU_StarFoxGuard_Airdrop.jpg

Little Re:bots

In this game mode, some enemies will have miniature Re:bots sitting on their heads. Be patient and wait for the little guys to hop off before engaging!

CI16_WiiU_StarFoxGuard_Rebots.jpg

Super Switches

If a bot trips a super switch, it’ll instantly become a far more dangerous invader. Keep them off those switches!

Sharpshooter

Defeat the enemy with a limited number of shots in this super tense game mode. Make ‘em count.

Online

In addition to all the exciting missions in Story Mode, Star Fox Guard also features a unique online* component where you can connect with players from across the globe. After passing a certain point in the game, you'll unlock My Squad and Rival Squads. Together, these game modes allow you to create your own enemy patterns on a chosen map and share them with other players, giving missions a more personal edge. Each mission you create is assigned a unique ID, so you can easily share it with the world.

My Squad

My Squad lets you create your own team of bots, orchestrating their attack patterns and spawn points on a Main Missions map. Start by choosing your squad size and assembling your own, personalised army of bots. Devise an attacking masterclass with the bots at your disposal by choosing when and where each one will appear in the mission, and the routes they’ll take towards the tower. Once you're happy with your enemy pattern, upload it to the internet for others to face.

CI16_WiiU_StarFoxGuard_Crowded_GamePad_enGB.jpg

Overwhelm potential challengers by mobilising a diverse range of robot types with varying abilities and tactics – make them attack from all angles at just the right time to create the perfect invasion. Distract contenders with the B.I.O. Units while Clucktrons steal their cameras, then send in a Big-G to smash the tower to pieces! Outfox friends with meticulously planned assaults, then crush their retaliations in Rival Squads to earn precious metals.

Rival Squads

Spice up the action by replaying missions with a dastardly twist! Select the Rival Squads option on a Main Missions map to take on that map again – only this time, you'll be fighting against a user-generated army, giving the battle a more personal edge.

CI16_WiiU_StarFoxGuard_RivalSquads_enGB.jpg

Players from all over the world will devise their most cunning plans of attack, ready for you to face, but be careful – armies that have been designed by other players may be even more unforgiving than you’re used to! With Rival Squads, there’s always a fresh challenge to take on.

World Rivals

World Rivals lets you fight endlessly against battle squads from all over the world. Choose to take on friends’ squads, search for a specific squad by using its ID, or simply select the size of squad you want to battle against and fight on! For a real challenge, take on the Star Strategist – real-world players whose squads have consistently proven themselves to be ruthlessly efficient.

CI16_WiiU_StarFoxGuard_WorldRivals.jpg

Your battle rating will rise and fall as you win and lose matches online – with each successive win, the difficulty increases and the rewards become greater and greater. Fall in battle just once, though, and you’ll have to build up your streak all over again…

*Internet connection required during play. The registration of Nintendo Network ID and acceptance of the Nintendo Network Agreement and Privacy Policy are required.

amiibo

Bombs away!

When the going gets tough, you can call in the cavalry with amiibo (sold separately) and turn the tide of battle in your favour. By tapping a Fox or Falco amiibo to the Wii U GamePad NFC touchpoint, you can call in hugely powerful, cinematic Arwing air strikes orchestrated by the legendary Star Fox squadron, wiping out all on-screen enemies in a massive blast!

CI16_WiiU_StarFoxGuard_amiiboStarFoxCall.jpg

Use these powerful allies wisely, though – you can only use each character’s amiibo once per day.
