Story & Characters

While rummaging through the attic in Peach’s Castle, Luigi accidentally knocks open a mysterious and magical book, causing paper friends and foes to fly out of its pages!

As reports of duplicates, doppelgangers, and doubles that are flatter than a pancake start to spread quickly through the Mushroom Kingdom, Princess Peach and Paper Peach request that Mario and Luigi get to work tidying this mess up and untangle their two worlds! Without a shred of hesitation, our heroes depart for adventure!

CI7_3DS_MarioAndLuigiPaperJamBros_MarioLuigi.jpg

Mario & Luigi

It wouldn’t be a Mario & Luigi game without the Super Mario Bros. doing what they do best: thwarting Bowser’s dastardly plans!

CI7_3DS_MarioAndLuigiPaperJamBros_PaperMario.jpg

Paper Mario

While a little on the flat side, Paper Mario is as much a full-bodied hero as his three dimensional counterpart, slipping through tight spaces with ease and creating copies of himself to defeat enemies!

CI7_3DS_MarioAndLuigiPaperJamBros_BowserPaperBowser.jpg

Bowser & Paper Bowser

By joining forces, these two are the biggest threat the Mushroom Kingdom has ever seen…when they’re not squabbling over who’s gets to sit in the throne that is!

Princess Peach & Paper Peach

Captured by two Bowsers, things are far from peachy for these two princesses. Still, that won’t stop them from devising their own means of escape…

Bowser Jr. & Paper Bowser Jr.

Is there anything worse than two Bowsers? A bored and fed up Bowser Jr. and Paper Bowser Jr. perhaps? Who knows what crafty schemes this newfound duo have planned?!

Kamek & Paper Kamek

Bowser’s most loyal minion Kamek has teamed up with Paper Kamek, which means twice the magical mischief…even if they don’t quite get along most of the time.

Gameplay

CI7_3DS_MarioAndLuigiPaperJamBros_MarioLuigiPaperMario.jpg

The worlds of Mario & Luigi and Paper Mario have crossed over, and it’s up to our heroes to venture through a mashed up Mushroom Kingdom to untangle them!

There’s no shortage of places to explore, from huge forests to sandy plains and ice-capped mountains. Along the way you’re sure to run into baddies, which you’ll need to best in battle if you want to proceed! But, if you find yourself lost, consult the map on the Touch Screen and follow the handy arrow that’ll point you in the direction of adventure…

CI7_3DS_MarioAndLuigiPaperJamBros_PaperThin.jpg

Paper-thin

As you explore, look out for cracks and other tight spaces in your surroundings and see if our flat friend Paper Mario can slip through them. You could discover hidden areas full of surprises that are inaccessible to the Super Mario Bros.!

Combine your powers

When an obstacle blocks the way, our heroes can combine their might into a Trio Move to overcome it!

CI7_3DS_MarioAndLuigiPaperJamBros_TrioHammer.jpg

Trio Hammer

With this marvellous move, Mario, Luigi, and Paper Mario swing their hammers one after the other to create an almighty wallop that can push or even destroy large objects.

CI7_3DS_MarioAndLuigiPaperJamBros_TrioGrab.jpg

Trio Grab

By standing on each other’s shoulders, your team can stretch over gaps and chasms to grab objects previously beyond their grasp or pull themselves to the other side.

CI7_3DS_MarioAndLuigiPaperJamBros_TrioDrill.jpg

Trio Drill

If you can’t go over, try going under! Tunnel into the ground and charge your drill dash into walls to climb up them.

CI7_3DS_MarioAndLuigiPaperJamBros_TroubledToad.bmp

Tidy up troubled Toads

Paper Toads are hiding all across the Mushroom Kingdom just waiting to be rescued. With the help of Lakitu and the Lakitu Info Centre, you can help tidy up these Toads by accepting Toad Rescue Missions.

To find these frightened fungi, you’ll need to solve puzzles, play minigames, defeat enemies, herd up large groups of them or even examine your surroundings to spot them – Paper Toads are awfully good at blending in!

CI7_3DS_MarioAndLuigiPaperJamBros_Battle.jpg

Battle it out!

Of course, throughout your adventures, you’ll have to deal with Bowser and Paper Bowser’s minions – both round and papery – using turn-based strategies and well-timed moves! Visit our Battles section to learn how to dish out damage in style.

CI7_3DS_MarioAndLuigiPaperJamBros_Hammer.jpg

Battles

With minions of all kinds causing chaos throughout the Mushroom Kingdom, you’re bound to get into scraps with some prickly characters. Battles in Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam Bros are both turn-based and timing-based, so it’s not just about which move you choose but also how well you perform it!

CI7_3DS_MarioAndLuigiPaperJamBros_BattleBasics.jpg

Battles Basics

When it’s your turn, you can choose from a variety of attacks, use an item from your inventory, or even flee! Each hero has a limited number of hit points or HP, and if that hits zero, they’ll faint. Try to dish out as much damage as possible while also defending against enemy attacks!

By defeating enemies, your heroes will earn ‘EXP’ which will help them level up and become even stronger. Sometimes, you’ll earn snazzy items and gear from battles, or coins you can use to purchase more items and gear from in-game shops.

CI7_3DS_MarioAndLuigiPaperJamBros_Timing.jpg

Master the timing

By pressing the buttons with the right timing, Mario, Luigi and Paper Mario’s attacks can do extra damage, or you might be able to dodge whacks from your opponents. A well-timed button press could be the difference between a brilliant blow or a feeble fumble, so practise moves until you’ve got the timing down.

Each baddie you come across has different attack patterns and tricks! If you can successfully dodge their moves, you might even be able to land a few extra hits yourself. Nice!

CI7_3DS_MarioAndLuigiPaperJamBros_StrikeFirst.jpg

Go for it!

Strike an unsuspecting enemy first by jumping on them or whacking them with your hammer, and you may get to deal some extra damage at the start of the battle. Be careful though, some enemies might have the same idea…

Smooth Moves

When it comes to dispatching foes, here are some moves that will help you deal massive damage!

You’ve only got a limited number of Bros. Points (BP), and both Bros. Attacks and Trio Attacks use up BP – so use them wisely!

CI7_3DS_MarioAndLuigiPaperJamBros_BattleCards.jpg

Clear the deck!

By performing Bros. Attacks and Trio Attacks, you’ll earn Star Points, which you can cash in to use Battle Cards: helpful cards that you can play during your turn in battle, which could give you an edge! Each card has a different effect: some will boost an ability, others deal massive damage, and some will score you epic loot!

You can unlock Battle Cards by defeating enemies, completing quests or purchasing them from shops. You can even create new types of cards using amiibo!

CI7_3DS_MarioAndLuigiPaperJamBros_PapercraftBattles.jpg

Handy Craft!

When you’re faced with ginormous papercraft bosses, jump aboard your own giant paper statue and put up the fight in Papercraft Battles! Unlike your usual turn-based combat, Papercraft Battles take place in real-time so be prepared for something a little different.

amiibo

CI7_NFCReader_Example.jpg

You can use compatible amiibo (sold separately) to create a variety of special card types to use in battle. Each card has its own unique design and effect that will help you deal more damage, temporarily boost your party’s abilities, or score more coins from combat.

Owners of New Nintendo 3DS or New Nintendo 3DS XL systems can tap amiibo to the NFC area on the bottom screen, while owners of original Nintendo 3DS, Nintendo 3DS XL or Nintendo 2DS systems can purchase the NFC Reader/Writer accessory to enjoy amiibo functionality in compatible software. Simply tap amiibo to the NFC Reader/Writer and away you go!

Find out which amiibo are compatible with Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam Bros. at our amiibo site.

CI7_3DS_MarioAndLuigiPaperJamBros_CharacterCards.jpg

Character Cards

To craft Character Cards, you’ll need a compatible amiibo and one of the in-game ? Cards, which can be purchased from shops or won in certain battles. Choose a ? Card and scan your amiibo to create a nifty Character Card, which you can then save to your amiibo. Each time you save a Character Card to an amiibo, it’s added to that figure’s Character Card Set for you to use in battle!

CI7_3DS_MarioAndLuigiPaperJamBros_CharacterCard.jpg

If you need help in battle, you can scan your amiibo and play one of the cards you’ve saved to that figure. You can only activate a Character Card from each amiibo once per battle, so choose wisely!

Special Cards

If you mix and match different compatible amiibo, there are even more rare and powerful cards you can discover!

Sometimes while making Character Cards, you might get a ‘Duo Card Chance’ prompt, and if you then scan a compatible amiibo of a different character, you’ll create a powerful Duo Card. If you have two compatible amiibo of the same character, you also create a shiny Sparkle Card. These types of cards aren’t just super powerful – you’ll even earn Star Points when you use them!
